What causes ADHD Symptoms?

There are two main causes which can contribute to problems with Attention Deficit Hyperactvity Disorder(ADHD).

Firstly there are areas of The Skill Learning Centre of the brain (the cerebellum) that controls the things that we focus on.

When these areas of the cerebellum are fully developed we can focus on those things that require our attention e.g. listening to the teacher in class. When they are not so well developed we will be distracted by less important things e.g. background noise. In some it causes impulsivity or hyperactivity.

Secondly, some of the skills we frequently use (e.g. turning words we "hear" into thoughts we can "understand") are processes that are not hard-wired i.e. we have to really "think" about them because they are not "happening effortlessly". DOing it this way requires so much more effort and often leads to tiredness and frustration.

In such situations our working memory will be full of things that really should not be there. For instance, when we are listening to a teacher, if "listening" is not fully automatic, our working memory will be already full and there will bge no room to retain the things that the teacher is saying.

We only have a finite amount of working memory space available so in such situations it is quite common to experience difficulty with maintaining attention on the subject in hand. This “overload” often, in turn, leads to a sense of frustration.
